The history of the sports movement development and formation in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug is closely connected with military-patriotic work of the Komsomol organizations which has transformed into the system of military-patriotic education of youth, its physical development.

Since 1927 the defense-sports work among youth was headed by military - sports commissions, formed at the committees of Komsomol organization, and regional councils of physical training and organizers of military - sports work at the Komsomol groups. In this period training in sports groups was organized, sports evenings, competitions on track and field athletics, rowing, struggle, ski races, football were held. The presidium of the Surgut Executive Committee, discussing the question of work of the physical training district council, noted the "significant rise of interest among youth to the physical training".

On June 09, 1931, by Decree of the Organizing office of the Ostyako-Vogulsky National (at present the  Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug ) five departments were organized. The functions connected with the organization of physical cultural work among the masses on the territory were given to the Cultural - social department.

In January 1933 the first ski competitions were held.

In 1934 the council on affairs of physical training and sports was organized, Leontjev was appointed the head on the post of executive secretary (there is no information about the name and patronymic name).

In 1935 the first chess tournament, the first rowing race by routes: Ostyako-Vogulsk (now Khanty-Mansiysk) - Surgut, Ostyako-Vogulsk - Beryozovo, Ostyako-Vogulsk - Nakhrachy (now Kondinskoye) were held. In the same year dogteam driver Brayko passed the way from Ostyako-Vogulsk to Obdorsk (Salekhard) by dog team. The newspaper "Khanty Mansi Shop" (Shoy) ("Ostyako-Vogulsk pravda") covered the unprecedented transition of seven brave skiers by the route Tobolsk - Moscow in detail. In its structure there were representatives: Arkhip Lozhev - 18-year skier from Samara, A. Fedulov - the head of the Peregrebinsk fish station. Beginning of transition was on December 24, 1935. In Moscow the skiers were met by the people's commissar A.I. Mikoian and awarded the medals "Symbol of Honor".

On July 1-5, 1936 the first Games of the Athletes, in which teams from six districts took part, were held. In the beginning of 1937 the ski transitions Ostyako-Vogulsk - Omsk, Ostyako-Vogulsk -Tobolsk- Ostyako-Vogulsk were carried out. The skiers from Beryezovo, Surgut, Nakhrachi came to the center.

In these years the youth actively participated in the work of Osoaviakhim organizations, passed the standards "Ready To Work And Defense", studied to shoot, to throw grenades, to ski. On May, 1938 132 recruits, 475 Voroshilovsky shooters have been trained, 250 people have passed the standards "Ready To Work And Defense" and 16 - "Be Ready To Work And Defense" in 162 Osoaviakhim organizations of the Ostyako-Vogulsky National . In 1939 800 people got the badge "Ready To Work And Defense", 4600 people were the members of physical-sports societies of the .

During the Great Patriotic war the military-sports training of pupils and youth was strengthened. Section and groups of skiers - shooters, throwers of grenades, bayonet fighting specialists were organized in sports groups. During these years militarized races, Komsomol-union cross-country races, ski competitions of mass character with thousand young participants were carried out. Thus, in Komsomol-youth cross-country race in 1945, devoted to the 27-th anniversary of the Red Army, 4217 people took part. In the beginning of 1943 the Komsomol members of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug reported the VIII communist conference that hundreds of young defenders of the Motherland had been trained. 2221 people were trained at the 125-hours courses of solders-skiers. 506 solders of bayonet fighting, 28 snipers, 407 women-shooters, 118 instructors of public activities, 4158 skiers, over 1000 people with the badge "Voroshilovsky shooter" have been prepared. Practically all Komsomol members have passed 20-30-hours program on skiing. In Khanty-Mansiysk 2000 people passed 15 km trip in gas masks, 8000 people took part in winter and summer cross-country races, 816 young people participated in the military relay race. By the end of the war there were 139 groups of physical training in the which had trained about 400 people with the badge "Ready To Work And Defense" and "Be Ready To Work And Defense", about 200 instructors on skiing, hand-to-hand fight and complex "Ready To Work And Defense", six skiing lodges, 152 ski educational divisions with 2280 people, engaged in them,  were created, 13 competitions of various kinds of sports, two chess tournaments were held. In August, 1944 the team of the won in the Interokrug Games which was held in the town of Salekhard..

In the post-war time the experience and traditions which have been gained by physical-sports organizations of the actively increased. In 1953 the First Village Youth Games and in 1958 the First National relay race were held. In 1959 the children's sports school was opened in the town of Khanty-Mansiysk, the pupils of which S.Danch, J.Kashkarov, E.Redkin achieved top results of the world sports, won the best medals in the world championships on biathlon, Olympic Games.

In these years the oil-and-gas fields which had been found on the territory of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug were actively developed. Thousands of young people came to the to construct new towns, to create fuel and energy base of the country. The most of them were true fans of physical training and sports, active participants in sports actions for the masses. In these years children-youth sports schools were created, sports halls, hockey courts, skiing lodges, swimming pools and other objects of physical training -sports were opened together with the industrial base creation. Traditions of the Komsomol-union cross-country races, ski cross holding are continued. The championship on ski races for a prize of the "Large Tyumen Oil" gained the status of all-Union ski competitions in the beginning of the 70s. Alongside with traditional kinds of sports, new kinds of sports - swimming, judo, volleyball, boxing, biathlon are actively developed, the national kinds of sports are cultivated.

The system of children-youth sports schools creation allowed to begin the systematic work on sports reserve training. In the 70-s, 80-s the Children-Youth Sport Schools of the was at the level of masters of sports, candidates to the national teams preparation. But weak material resources, absence of conditions for higher education did not allow the gifted sportsmen to improve their skill in the physical-sports organizations of the . The perspective sportsmen left the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous after school graduating.

Physical training sports movement of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug got a new impulse and new opportunities for development in 1993, when according to the new Constitution the Russian Federation the gained the status of the Federation member and the opportunity to solve social questions independently, including questions of physical training and sports development.

In the last years, in spite of difficulties of economic character, numerous personnel and structural changes, the system of physical training-improving and sports movement in the was kept, and the basic parameters providing the branch development considerably increased as well.

At present the physical training and sports takes a special place in the formation of positive and active attitude to the healthy way of life among the youth and adult population, and it is an important part of the social policy of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug .
