Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug is an entity of the Russian
Federation. The Okrug is an original place of indigenous
small-in-number peoples Khanty and Mansi's residence.

Administrative centre of the Okrug is the town of
Khanty-Mansiysk.

The chronology of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug development:

1096 Ugra was firstly mentioned in Russian chronicles;

1708 by Decree of Peter I the Siberian Province was
founded
(the towns of Beryezov, Surgut were joined to it);
-
1775 by Decree of Yekaterina II the Tobolsk Province
was founded, almost the whole West Siberia was joined to it;
-
1918 Tobolsk Province was renamed into the Tyumen
Province and the provincial center was moved to the town of Tyumen;
-
1923 Provinces, uezds, volosts were abolished. The
Uralsky Region, Tobolsk Okrug and Districts Beryozovsky, Surgutsky,
Samarovsky, Kondinsky were formed;

1930 By Order of the All-Russia Central Executive
Committee it was formed the Ostyako-Vogulsky National Okrug with the
center in the settlement of Samarovo;

1931, May beginning of the new Okrug centre
construction - Ostyako-Vogulsk;

1934 Ostyako-Vogulsky National Okrug was joined
to the Omsk Region;

1940, October 23 Okrug centre Ostyako-Vogulsk
was renamed into Khanty-Mansiysk, Okrug into the Khanty-Mansiysk
National Okrug;

1944 by Decree of the Supreme Council Presidium of the USSR it was formed the Tyumen Region. Khanty-Mansiysk National Okrug was joined to it;

1977 Khanty-Mansiysk National Okrug gained the
status of the Autonomous Okrug;
-
1993 Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug became
equal in rights constituent entity of the Russian Federation in
accordance with Clause 65 of the Constitution of the Russian
Federation;

2003 by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation # 841
of July 25, 2003, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug was renamed into
Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug Ugra.
